An additional charge has been filed against former Wrangell physician Greg Salard, who currently is currently awaiting trial in Juneau on charges of possessing and distributing child pornography.
On April 21, federal prosecutors filed an additional charge for receipt of the material, which could add five years to Salard's prison time if convicted.
Salard was arrested at his Wrangell home last October following a five-month online investigation by the FBI. Prosecutors allegedly found 104 files containing child pornography on a computer in the home at the time of his arrest.
Salard has pled not guilty to the charges. His trial was initially set for January but was postponed to February and again to May 27 as the defense prepares its case. He is currently being held at Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau.
Earlier this month, Salard was further charged with being a fugitive from justice as the state of Louisiana prepares for extradition on the charge of Aggravated Rape. The charges stem from allegations made in 2007 of child sexual abuse occurring since 2004.
According to the U.S. District Attorney’s office, if convicted of all three charges Salard faces a minimum statutory penalty of up to 20 years imprisonment and possible life imprisonment if convicted of the rape charge in Louisiana.
Before his arrest, Salard had served as a physician specializing in family practice with Alaska Island Community Services since 2009 and had been chief-of-staff at Wrangell Medical Center since July 2013. He is now no longer employed by either organization.
Salard's privileges at the hospital were temporarily suspended for three weeks in 2011, following allegations of improper interaction with patients. After an internal investigation and reinstatement, privileges were again denied from March 2012 to the following February.
