Beginning immediately, communications provider GCI will waive all fees associated with all international voice calls and texts to Nepal. The Alaska-based company hopes that this will make it easier and more affordable for Alaskans, whether they are currently in Alaska or roaming in the continental United States or Hawaii, to reach loved ones who have been affected by the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on April 25.
“Alaska’s climbing community was devastated about the news of the tragic earthquake near Kathmandu, affecting Mount Everest and villages throughout the Himalaya. There are many Alaskans who have loved ones in Nepal, either there as visitors or Nepalese,” said Matt Szundy, owner of Ascending Path and an Alaskan guide who has led four expeditions in Nepal. “Hopefully having a free means to communicate with their loved ones will offer some sense of hope and encouragement to those here in Alaska as well as those in Nepal.”
Available through May 20, the free service is valid for calls made from home phones as well as wireless devices. Free talk and text to Nepal is available to all GCI wireless subscribers including those who have recently transitioned from Alaska Communications; however, prepaid users are not eligible.
Customers are not required to make any action on their account before calling or texting family and friends in Nepal, but those with questions are welcome to call GCI customer representatives at 265-5400 or 800-800-4800. Anyone wishing to support crisis relief in Nepal can visit the Red Cross website.
