Members of the Wrangell chapter of Alaska Ducks Unlimited (DU) were pleased to announce they raised $8,000 for conservatory causes at the 30th Annual Fundraising Banquet on May 2.
“We did well. It was a successful dinner,” explained Keene Kohrt, on the DU chapter’s committee.
The Stikine Inn was hired to cater the dinner, and an assortment of hunting and recreational items were sold through silent and live auction. Kohrt estimated that in addition to the money the group raised, the event put $6,000 into the local economy.
The state’s habitats are more broadly a part of the Pacific Flyway, the coastal territory ducks and other migratory waterfowl use during their annual migratory cycles. While the Stikine River area largely serves as a stopover for migrating ducks, in the summer more substantial populations live further north in Alaska’s interior.
The money raised at the banquet will go to a variety of conservation programs around the state that are aimed at enhancing and protecting wetland habitats for Alaska’s swans, geese and ducks. By 2013 DU’s efforts have conserved 5,792 acres of habitat, mapped 200 million acres and spent more than $8.5 million on projects statewide.
In addition to the Nolan Center, the annual dinner was supported by a collection of local businesses, including the Stikine Inn, Buness Bros., First Bank and Wells Fargo Bank.
