Hospital dinner raises $32K for cancer care

The Wrangell Medical Center Foundation raised at least $32,000 for charity during its 8th annual prime rib dinner and auction, and the 8th annual Brian Gilbert Memorial Tournament last weekend.

“We did a little better overall this year than we did last year,” explained Kris Reed, WMC development coordinator. “With sponsorships, it will be a little higher than that.”

Most of the tickets to the dinner were pre-sold, with the rest sold at the door. “We had pretty much a full house,” she said.

Earlier in the day, 39 golfers took part in the tournament at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course. Eight years ago the memorial tournament was the main event, but the dinner has grown in the ensuing years.

“It’s grown a little bit,” Reed admitted.

A silent and live auction were each held after the catered meal, with Portland-area auctioneer Steve Talbot putting a wide variety of items under the hammer. Along with with his own skills, Talbot also brought along several exotic travel packages for the bidding.

“We had a very good weekend, and a lot of that was thanks to the effort of Steve Talbot,” said Reed.

Proceeds from the weekend go to support WMC’s Cancer Care and new Scholarship funds. The former goes to assist patients seeking cancer treatment in paying for housing and travel expenses.

“We had our first awardee this year,” Reed said of the scholarship. Recent high school graduate Michael Otteson received a $1,000 two-year renewable award for his studies. The scholarship is not just for high school students, it can be awarded to any community members pursuing medical studies.
