Working through the month of May, Hope Community Church of God finished putting a new, metal roof over its rollerskating rink. Built as an addition to the church three decades ago, metal components in the rink’s roof had rusted over time and the structure was in general need of replacement.
“It was a timely venture,” said Mike Powers, with the church. “We price-checked a couple of things and it looked like the metal would work out well.”
The church had been socking away funds for the project, which cost around $20,000 in all.
“They’d been preparing for that some time,” Powers said.
Though at first set back by rain, the project was eventually aided by a three-week spell of dry weather. Volunteers from Wrangell and the Church of God in Juneau helped build the roof, installing the underlayment and plywood, fitting the roofing panels and applying a rubberized paint to prevent a recurrence of rust.
“We just kept pecking away at it,” said Powers. By the end of May work was complete. “From start to finish, that was probably three or four weeks. We’re happy to have that done.”
Powers said Bernie Massin helped solve some of the churchyard’s drainage issues with his backhoe, and Trent Maxand and Leif Larsson also helped out.
Now that the roof is back up, he explained the church’s Saturday open skate can resume. However, the church needs an administrator for the weekend program. The pay scale would be determined by usage of the facility, which is also generally booked for birthday parties. Wrangell’s roller derby team the Garnet Grit Betties also makes occasional use of the rink for its summer practices.
“It’d be really nice if we got the Saturday skate going again,” Powers said.
