New logo picked for Parks and Rec

Wrangell's parks and recreation department will be getting a new look, after deciding on a winner of its logo contest last month.

The department's advisory board chose a design submitted by local artist Charity Hommel, who submitted 16 variations for the contest, which drew entries from a dozen other artists

"I'm honored my design was chosen," Hommel said. A longtime artist with experience in brand design, she explained the simple black-and-white layout gave it versatility as a logo. It has a local flavor to it as well, based on the view from the park at Shoemaker Bay.

"I just figured the simpler the better," she said.

Hommel has dabbled in design and pencil drawing since she was young and has since worked as a photographer. She also designed the logos for Wrangell's Community Market and the Southeast Beasts, a running nonprofit.

"It's a lot of fun to see my design show up," Hommel added. "It's very rewarding."

For winning the competition Hommel received $300.

"She put in a ton of effort," commented department director Kate Thomas. Eventually the logo will be used on Parks Department vehicles, stationary and promotional items.

It will also see use on the department's website, which is currently being updated. The site's user interface will be improved and information updated in a more timely manner.
