A limited number of Anan Wildlife Observatory permits will be made available at the Wrangell District Office. Visitors are required to obtain a permit to visit the observatory from July 5 through August 25.
Earlier this spring the United States Forest Service began using the National Reservation System for those wishing to visit Anan, 30 miles to Wrangell's southeast. To facilitate the transition to this new system, up to four permits per day will still be offered through the Wrangell District Office using a weekly lottery.
To apply for one of these permits, an application must be submitted in person at the USFS office during office hours by the dates listed on its website, about a week in advance of the planned visit. Successful applicants will be notified each Tuesday and permits must be paid for prior to the permit date.
Any remaining permits will then be offered over the counter on a first come/first serve basis. These permits are not available to any commercial guides. A valid ID with a name corresponding to the name on the permit will need to be presented at the Anan trailhead.
Information on the observatory, including site restrictions and a list of authorized guiding services can be found on the Tongass National Forest website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/R10/Tongass/AnanObsrv. For more information, contact the ranger's office at 874-2323.
