Election results certified, 23% turnout for 2015

Wrangell's Canvass Board verified the results of last week's municipal election, which were certified by the City and Borough Assembly at a special meeting Monday afternoon.

Of 1,639 registered voters, 375 cast ballots either at the polls on Oct. 6 or beforehand as absentees. Of these, 13 were deemed spoiled due to improper marking, and another three were rejected due to the voters being improperly registered.

The board was made up of Assembly members Julie Decker and Daniel Blake and Mayor David Jack, supervised at City Hall by election staff. Members inspected faxed-in and absentee ballots first, which were then shuffled and fed into the voting machine.

Ballots were then removed from the box for inspection, with written-in votes separately verified and tallied by hand.

Of the final tally, Proposition 2 was the most tightly-contested vote (see box), with 191 voters for and 166 against the measure. The proposition exempts local officials from financial disclosure requirements under state statute. A similar proposition was passed in Petersburg during its own municipal elections.

The election was also one for the incumbents, with candidates running for seats on the Assembly, Port Commission, School Board and Hospital Board winning re-election. Two three-year seats on the Assembly were contested in a three-way race; candidate Christie Jamieson had run a write- in campaign against David Powell and Becky Rooney but received 75 votes to their 276 and 284.

A three-way race for two three-year terms on the School Board saw incumbents Tamara Groshong and Aleisha Mollen re-elected, though Rolland Howell garnered a respectable 190 votes to their respective 249 and 252.

A one-year unexpired term on the School Board was won by Pamella McCloskey, with 283 votes to candidate Beth Comstock's 83.

Maxlyn Wiederspohn and Woody Wilson both ran unopposed for two seats on the Hospital Board, as did Clay Hammer and John Martin for the Port Commission. Proposition 1-removing reference to the Thomas Bay Power Authority from the Home Rule Charter-was approved 235 votes to 89.
