Wrangell High School's Lady Wolves had a good weekend in Petersburg Oct. 16 and 17, during the 2A North Seeding Tournament.
The team's volleyball players racked up four wins out of six games in the best-of-five tournament.
"It was a really good trip," said the girls' coach, Jessica Whittaker. "I was really proud of them."
Wrangell won its first game on Friday. Playing Metlakatla, the girls won three-for-three matches, scoring 25-12, 25-17, and 25-11.
Craig proved a tougher match, winning the first two sets 25-22 and 27-25. Wrangell won its third set, 25-23, but lost the final 19-25.
Whittaker thought her team held its own against Craig, which she expects will be the team to beat at Region V next month.
Saturday was a long but fruitful day, with Wrangell racking up three wins in a row. The midday game against Klawock was the closest matched of these, with Wrangell winning its first two sets 25-14 and 25-16, but losing its third 20-25. The Lady Wolves rallied in the final set, winning 25-16.
The day ended with a match-up against the tournament hosts, Petersburg. Recently returning to 2A from Division 3, the Lady Vikings won all three sets, 25-17, 25-16, and 25-7. The team finished with six wins and no losses, winning each in only three sets.
"Playing Petersburg was great for the girls, because they were able to keep up with them," Whittaker said afterward.
She said the girls have improved their communication and have been working on their passing.
"The girls are really improving the end of their game," she added.
Whittaker said two of the team's freshmen players really shined during the tournament. Ashley Allen had an excellent passing game throughout, and Helen Decker showed skill at a relatively new right-hand post.
The coach said Teresa Flores was the star of the show though, having one of the highest serving percentages and kill rates for the team. It is looking to be a good season for her already. At the Juneau JIVE Tournament the previous weekend, Flores was named to the all-tournament team for having the most kills there, at 27.
Wrangell's volleyball team heads back to Juneau this
weekend, participating in Thunder Mountain High School's All-Comers Tournament. After that, the team will be hosting the 2A South Seeding on Nov. 6 and 7 before preparing for regionals.
