The Lady Wolves volleyball team scored some wins at last weekend's All-Comers tournament in Juneau. Hosted by Thunder Mountain High School, Wrangell's girls were able to mix it up at the varsity and junior varsity level.
On Friday Petersburg's JV beat the Lady Wolves twice, 25 to 8 and 25 to 14. The Lady Vikings' varsity team would also sweep Wrangell's the next evening. Recently added to 2A, Petersburg has been the team to beat this year.
"They did pretty well," said Wrangell coach Jessica Whitaker. "The girls were still able to be competitive with them."
Wrangell split with the host team, with Thunder Mountain winning the first match in a close 25 to 23 but losing the second 22 to 25.
Juneau-Douglas High School's JV also split with Wrangell, with the Lady Wolves winning the first match 25 to 20 before being edged out in the second, 21 to 25.
Wrangell swept Sitka in both of their matches, but Mt. Edgecumbe proved another tough competitor. MEHS won both games, 25 to 8 and 25 to 13.
In the All-Comers, Whitaker said the team did well overall. She commended Katie Barger on her serve percentage, and Makena Hammer got more than a few tipped kills this weekend in the middle position.
Whitaker said the trip itself was a success, despite the team coming down with an illness while traveling Thursday. Wrangell's girls were accompanied by the high school wrestling team, whose tournament was also being hosted by Thunder Mountain.
The girls will get to enjoy a bye week this weekend before hosting the South Seeding Tournament Nov. 6 and 7.
