Wrangell High School’s wrestlers took third place last weekend during the Brandon Pilot Invitational Tournament at the Thunder Mountain High School campus in Juneau.
“The guys did very well, I’m very proud of them,” said the Wolves’ coach, Jeff Rooney.
Chet Armstrong took first place for his 182-pound bracket, pinning Joshua Goeden of Sitka in the final at 5:48.
“Chet really came out and did very well,” said Rooney.
In the 120-pound class, Orion Heller took second place with two for three wins. He was pinned in the final round by Ketchikan’s Sean Tavares in 0:31.
Teammate Ian Jenson also placed second in his 132-pound bracket, winning two of three bouts. Caleb Suarez of Sitka won by majority decision in the final.
Darren Shilts placed second for the 170-pound bracket, pinning Victor Quintana of Sitka in 1:40 and Ketchikan’s Gerik Sherrill in 4:37. Tyler Cole of TMHS bested him in the final in a 6-2 decision.
Sam Armstrong placed third in the crowded 145-pound bracket, winning four of his five bouts.
Teammates Dillon Rooney and Sig Decker competed in the same class, each winning two of their four matches.
In the 98-pound bracket, JD Barratt also took third place. In the round-robin, Barratt bested Ketchikan’s Connor McCormick by 15-2 majority decision, but was pinned by Ketchikan Payton Stewart in 0:52 and beaten by 6-3 decision by TMHS’s Connor Norman.
Rooney said Wolves newcomer Chris Seddon placed fourth in his 220-pound bracket, and that the team overall had a good showing.
“We had a good tournament. We finished third overall,” he said.
The ferry ride back will make for a tight schedule this week for the wrestlers, who are already on their way to Ketchikan for a tournament there Friday and Saturday. Afterward, the Wolves have three more tournaments before the Region V tournament in Petersburg on Dec. 11.
