Interisland ferry resuming service

The North End Ferry Authority Board of Directors announced its local three-stop ferry service will resume tomorrow, after its lander underwent engine repairs in Wrangell.

The Rainforest Islander departed on Nov. 5, after repairs to an engine and its port-side transmission were completed.

Based in Coffman Cove, the ferry service was planned to be a low-cost service connecting communities on Wrangell, Mitkof and Prince of Wales islands. The ferry will begin operating at its reduced winter schedule, traveling Fridays and Sundays only.

On both days, the Rainforest Islander is scheduled to depart from Coffman Cove at 9 a.m., arriving in Wrangell at 12:06 p.m. Departing from there at 12:35 p.m. the ferry is scheduled to touch down at Banana Point on Mitkof Island at 1:53 p.m.

It will leave Mitkof Island at 2:25 p.m., returning to Wrangell at 3:43 p.m. Its last leg of the daily circuit begins at 4:15 p.m. when it returns to Coffman Cove by 7:21 p.m.

When landing in Wrangell, the Rainforest Islander will continue to stop in Reliance Harbor, landing at the power plant ramp when possible. Landings there have proven tricky due to its sharp slope at low tide, and the ferry service is currently awaiting a reply from the state Department of Transportation regarding the use of its ramp by the airport.

North End Ferry Authority notes there may be slight changes to departure times to accommodate school traffic. For more information consult the service website at http://www.rainforestislandsferry.com.
