Girls regular basketball season begins

Petersburg's varsity team picked up a pair of wins while hosting Wrangell for homecoming Jan. 8 and 9.

During Friday's game, the Lady Vikings built up a formidable lead through the first half. While the Lady Wolves led for free throws with 7 of 10 landed, they finished up the game 29 to 56.

Amy Jensen led the team for scores with 12 points, including a free throw and a three-pointer in the final quarter. Teresa Flores and Anna Allen each scored seven points, Abby Gerald scored two and Abby Armstrong made a free throw for one.

The following evening ended similarly, with Petersburg starting with a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and building from there. The hosting team ended the game with 48 points to Wrangell's 27. Jensen again led her team for scores with 10 points, followed by Flores with eight, Allen with seven and Helen Decker with two.

In Friday's junior varsity game Wrangell had been within reach of beating Petersburg. Fourteen missed free throws might have made the difference, with the Lady Vikings leading only 44 to 33 by the final buzzer.

Scores were kept within a few points of each other during the first half of Saturday's rematch, but Petersburg pulled ahead in the third quarter. The game finished with a Viking victory, 39 to 22.

For the weekend Allen led the JV team with 23 total points, followed by Armstrong with 17. Gerald and Katelyn Early each scored four points, Decker and Grace Cano three, and Hutten two.

The Lady Wolves head out to Haines this weekend for the team's next couple of games, then will host Metlakatla on Jan. 22 and 23.
