Playing in Haines over the weekend, Wrangell’s Lady Wolves basketballers were not quite able to take a win, despite a close game Saturday.
The Glacier Bears
maintained a lead throughout the first game Friday, finishing with 58 to Wrangell’s 38. Among the Lady Wolves, Amy Jensen led the team for points with 12, followed by Helen Decker with nine. Teresa Flores scored eight points, Anna Dow Allen five,
and Abby Armstrong and Abigail Gerald each had two apiece.
On Saturday evening the Lady Wolves played a much closer game, bringing the score to a tie at 29 by the half. A string of scores by Haines in the third spread the gap a bit, and a late-game rally by Wrangell was not quite enough to pull a win. Haines finished with its second win of the weekend, 58 to 52.
During the game Jensen again led her team for scores, making 28 in all and making nine out of 12 free throws. Flores followed suit with 12 points scored, Decker with seven, and Allen with five.
The junior varsity squads played a tight, low-scoring game on Friday. The score was tied at four points by halftime, but Haines pulled ahead in the final quarter to win 20 to 17. The roles were reversed during Saturday’s JV game as Wrangell dominated the scoreboard, finishing 32 to 11.
Over the weekend Abby Armstrong led the squad for points, scoring 15. Helen Decker picked up 11 points, Anna Allen Dow eight, Reyn Hutten six, Abby Gerald three and Grace Cano two.
The girls will be
hosting Metlakatla this weekend before heading to Craig the next. On Feb. 12 and 13 Wrangell High School will host Petersburg for its homecoming weekend.
