Wrangell High School's girls basketball team was dealt another pair of losses over the weekend, hosting Metlakatla.
During Friday's game, the Lady Wolves quickly fell behind Metlakatla's offense, which built up an early lead in the second quarter and sunk a number of hoops in the third. Wrangell was able to outscore the Miss Chiefs in the final but were unable to close the gap, finishing the game 35-57.
The next evening Metlakatla was on fire again, taking the lead early on in the first quarter and matching Wrangell for points through the next two quarters. A series of fouls in the fourth gave the visiting team the opportunity to sink seven of 10 free throws, and the Miss Chiefs finished with a 57-41 win.
Anna Allen scored 28 points for Wrangell over the weekend, Amy Jensen 22, and Teresa Flores 19. Flores also led both teams for free-throw accuracy, dropping eight of nine attempts. Helen Decker and Abby Armstrong scored five and two points, respectively.
The junior varsity girls played a close game Friday, with the Miss Chiefs JV just maintaining a lead through the fourth quarter despite some hard driving by Wrangell. Metlakatla won the game 30-26.
On the team, Anna Allen led the Lady Wolves for points with 14, contributing heavily to their late-game comeback. Armstrong logged nine points for the game, Grace Cano two, and Helen Decker one.
The next evening Wrangell's JV came out well on top, winning 30 to 14. Decker led for points with 12, followed by Armstrong with eight. Katelyn Early scored five points and Reyn Hutten made three of four free-throw shots. Allen and Abby Gerald each scored a point.
The two losses puts the team at 0-6 so far for the season, which heads into its second half after this weekend's away games at Craig. After a bye week, both the Wrangell boys and girls teams will be hosting Petersburg for their homecoming weekend, Feb. 12 to 13.
