Wrangell High School's boys basketball team chalked up a pair of wins at home over the weekend.
The Wolves captured the momentum early on in Friday's game, leading throughout the high-scoring matchup and finishing 92-62.
Tyler Gillen led the team for points, scoring 26. He led for free-throws as well, sinking six of 11 attempts, and picked up three assists and three steals.
Trent Stokes, Tyman Teat and Blake Stokes each scored 11 in the game, Dawson Miller had 10,
Bryce Gerald eight, Sam Prysunka and Chet Armstrong five, Sam Armstrong and Tarren Privett two, and Jared Allen one. Overall the team shot just under 48 percent for the evening.
Gerald performed well defensively Friday, nabbing eleven rebounds, six steals and five assists for the night. He about doubled that the next evening with twenty rebounds.
Saturday's scores stayed close through the first third of the game, tying up early in the second quarter. Wrangell pulled away with a series of free throws and some tenacious offense, leading by 14 at the end of the half. The Panthers made some gains in the third quarter but were unable to overtake their hosts, with the Wolves outscoring them through the fourth for an 83-65 win.
B. Stokes came out of the game with 25 points, with seven of his nine baskets shot from the three-point line. Gerald logged 19 points during Saturday's game; Gillen 12; S. Armstrong seven; Miller five; T. Stokes, Teat and Davis Dow three apiece; Prysunka and C. Armstrong two; and Privett one.
The Wolves junior varsity squad also had a good weekend, winning both of its games against Craig. Friday evening the team capitalized on an early lead and finished 60-40. During the game Riley Blatchley put down seven of 11 free throws.
The next evening was a bit of a blowout, with Wrangell winning 67-26. Teat and Jean Luc Lewis led their team for points through the weekend, scoring 31 and 25, respectively.
The wins put the varsity team at 3-5 for its division, and after its bye this weekend the Wolves will begin the second half of the season by hosting undefeated Petersburg. The teams will go head to head
during Wrangell's homecoming games on Feb. 12 and 13.
