After three public meetings held last week and in March, the design team for redevelopment of Wrangell's former Institute property put together a unified proposal. Based on the likes and dislikes put forward about 15 initial draft concepts, the proposal integrates a combination of uses for the 134-acre property, with a residential school campus and senior assisted living center at the northwestern end, surrounded by small- and mid-scale residential arrangements. The biggest upfront costs to the community will be extending utilities to the sprawling property. R&M Engineering president Trevor Sande estimated all phases of development could cost in excess of $9,000,000. Residential housing envisioned for the northeasternmost lots would require lift stations for water access, being relatively high up in elevation. Comments are still being sought on the draft before a final version is presented to the Wrangell Assembly later in the summer. Visit wrangell-institute.blogspot.com for more details.
