After the extended Independence day weekend, city workers last week began the process of collecting the considerable amounts of litter, egg shells and fireworks remnants from Front Street, while stray strands of dried Silly String may take a bit longer to wash off.
As ever, Wrangell’s
celebration made for an
enjoyable weekend, with its events well-attended and
its Royalty competition breaking record numbers for fundraising.
Despite the lengthy, at times messy festivities, Wrangell Police Department reported problems had been at a minimum this year.
“We thought it went really well,”said Chief Doug McCloskey. “For the most part, everybody was pretty well behaved.”
According to the
police activity report, there were only two arrests
made over the weekend. Jason Lee Garringer was brought in on domestic violence
charges, as was Cathie Anne Angerman on charge of
driving under the influence. The latter was due to appear in Wrangell’s District Court on
Wednesday.
Last summer, the
July 4 weekend also had one DUI arrest, but also a number of citations issued and
reports of vandalism.
That appears to be the
average for the holiday in the past few years, though this
year no citations were
handed out over the holiday weekend.
A car was reported stolen but was recovered without
incident, another damaged,
and there had been a discharged firearm complaint. But
the majority of activity
was kept to locating lost
items, unlocking vehicle doors, and providing courtesy
transport for individuals
unable to drive themselves.
“We kept active, but it was a pretty good crowd,” McCloskey said.
