Wrangell's girls were swept during their Homecoming weekend games against Petersburg, following a set of wins over Craig the previous week.
After much back and forth, Wrangell's varsity team took the lead early on in Friday's game, leading at the half 16-13. Tied at 23 by the end of the third, the Lady Vikings rallied hard in the fourth quarter, finishing with a 43-34 win.
Leading offensively, Maddy Harding scored 14 points in the game, with four of her baskets being three-pointers. Kaylyn Easterly followed up with 10 points, and made six of seven free throws attempted.
On Saturday, Wrangell kept apace with their visitors, tied at 12 by the first quarter's end. Fouls were a factor throughout the game, but Petersburg made only two of seven attempts in the second quarter, keeping their lead to a tight 23-20. The Lady Wolves bounced back into the lead after the half, leading 30-28 going into the fourth. But the Lady Vikings were granted 14 more free throw attempts, of which its players landed eight. Petersburg won 44-37.
Easterly led her team for points, making four of five FTs and scoring 17 overall. Anna Allen made her presence felt on the court as well, scoring nine points of her own.
The Lady Wolves JV fared similarly, trailing the JV Lady Vikings through Friday's game. Petersburg won 43-21, aided by a dozen extra free throws during the fourth quarter.
Saturday the girls did a little better, despite a scoreless first quarter. The largest gains were saved for the final minutes, with Wrangell scoring 14 points during the fourth, bringing the score to 25-46.
After the weekend, the Lady Wolves are at 4-6-0 for the 2016-17 season, and 4-5-0 for the region. Three more weekends remain for the regular season, next up against region leaders Metlakatla tomorrow and Saturday. After that, the girls will host Haines February 17 and 18, then will rematch the Lady Vikings in Petersburg March 3 and 4.
