Wrangell High School's girls finished off the home stretch of their season with a pair of wins over Haines last weekend.
On Friday the game began very much back-and-forth, with Wrangell leading 7-6 by the end of the first quarter. By the end of the second the team had extended its hold to 23-12, with Helen Decker landing six of eight free throws for the half and Anna Allen racking up 13 points.
The team continued to outscore its visitors the rest of the game, with both teams scoring in the double digits in the third quarter. Decker herself picked up another 16 points in the latter half, leading her team for points with 22 for its 51-25 win.
The girls were at it again the next game, though Haines rebounded from its Friday performance with a close game through the first three quarters. Wrangell scarcely held a lead at 18-16 by the half, and Haines finally pulled ahead by one into the fourth period.
By the final eight minutes, fouls played heavily into Wrangell's favor, with the girls given a shot at 17 baskets, of which they made six. Adding that to their five two-pointers, to Haines' five-point quarter, and Wrangell came out ahead 42-32 for a win.
It being the last home game for the year, time was taken to recognize the efforts of the team's outgoing senior class. Grace Cano, Hailie Davis, and team manager Josephine Lewis will all be heading off this summer. Of the teammates they leave behind, more than half will be sophomores next year, giving time for them to continue coalescing as a unit in future seasons.
Wrangell High School's pep band also bid farewell to its graduating class. Nick Cole, Joe Hommel and Darren Shilts were given a farewell before Friday's game. Without a cheer squad this year, it's been down to the band to keep home crowds pepped up throughout the season.
The girls next head to Petersburg in a week, after having a bye this weekend. Following that, they head to Ketchikan for Region V.
