In a press release issued last Thursday the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reminded hunters the seasons for Sitka black-tailed deer are closed, and that they should by now be submitting harvest reports.
In Wrangell’s Unit 3 remainder area, the season concluded November 30. On the mainland in Unit 1B just to its east, the season wrapped up December 31. Preliminary statistics for the sectors’ 2017 totals are as yet unavailable, but the year prior 1,193 hunters bagged 903 bucks or just over 0.75 per hunter.
All hunters who obtained deer harvest tickets are required to return completed hunt reports to ADFG. This includes those who obtained a ticket but neither hunted nor harvested any deer.
For those who have not yet filed a report, the department asks they do so immediately either by mail, in person at their local ADFG office, or online at http://hunt.alaska.gov. In Wrangell the office’s postal address is Box 200, zip code 99929. For Petersburg hunters the address is Box 667, zip code 99833.
Information provided in hunt reports helps biologists monitor deer populations and estimate changes in area-specific harvest and hunting effort, and it also provides data needed for recommending appropriate seasons and bag limits. The more detailed information hunters
provide, the better ADFG biologists can track these trends and make management decisions.
