The United States Forest Service announced recently that visitors will soon be able to request the daily permits for the Anan Wildlife Observatory this summer.
Permits are required from July 5 - August 25 to visit the observatory. Outside that window, no permit is necessary.
Four permits are set aside each day from the other allotments to accommodate last-minute planning, though they need to be requested for in person at the Wrangell Ranger District, and up to a week in advance.
Requests can be
made by filling out a form at the front desk, so long as individuals listed on the form are physically present at the time of request. Weekly requests will be collected Mondays at 4:30 and awarded on Tuesdays by noon. If several requests are made for the same day, a lottery for awarding reservations will be held on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. If there is any space left, requests will be accommodated on a first come, first serve basis through the front desk during regular weekly business hours, 8 a.m to 4:30 p.m.
*The Wrangell Ranger District Office will be closed July 4 for the holiday.
Further information on the observatory, including site restrictions and a list of authorized guiding services, can be found at the Tongass National Forest website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/R10/Tongass/AnanObsrv or call the Wrangell Ranger District office at 874-2323.
