Parks and Rec Department prepares for another season of youth basketball

The youth basketball program hosted by the Wrangell parks and recreation department has been a part of the community for many years, according to Lucy Robinson, who played from fourth through sixth grade. She said that the program is a good opportunity for children to get a good foundation on the basics of basketball while also having lots of fun.

The youth basketball program is open for kids from the second to the fifth grade. Robinson said that it is open to sixth graders, as long as they are not on the middle school basketball team. Registration for the program closed last Monday, she said, and the season officially begins next week.

“Practice begins on the week of Sept. 17 and our first game, for some of the teams, is Sept. 25,” Robinson said. “It’s a very quick season, it’s pretty short.”

According to the parks and recreation department’s website, the regular season runs until Oct. 16 and 18, when the end of season tournament is played. After that, Robinson added that the All Stars from the fourth and fifth grade teams will travel to Petersburg for a game on Nov. 10. All Stars from Petersburg will also come to Wrangell on Nov. 17.

“We are really wanting to focus on basketball fundamentals,” Robinson said. “Mixing the skills and the drills with fun, keeping the kids engaged, yet slowing it down a little bit and focusing on the fundamentals of basketball, so they can learn a solid skill set and take that on. So that’s where we’re going with it.”
