Alaska Day Fun Run scheduled for October 20

Over 150 years ago, on Oct. 18, 1867, the territory of Alaska was transferred from Russia to the United States of America. Today, Oct. 18 is commemorated across the state as “Alaska Day.” Southeast Beasts, a Wrangell running group, has organized an Alaska Day fun run on Oct. 20 to commemorate the holiday and to raise funds for the Wrangell Mariner’s Memorial.

This will be the fourth fun run to take place in Wrangell. Lucy Robinson, with Southeast Beasts, said they did the fun run for three years in a row, but took a break last year. She said her group is happy to help raise awareness and funds for the Mariner’s Memorial, a proposed memorial to recognize Wrangell fishermen lost at sea.

“It’s a big part of our community, our fishermen,” Robinson said. “We want to give something back.”

The fun run will be a family-friendly event, she said, with different events for people of all skill levels to participate in. The fun run will consist of a one mile “family dash,” a 5k, a 10k, and a half marathon. After the runners all return, there will be food, drinks, door prizes, and live music by the band Trego. Robinson said that Jenn Miller, with the Mariner’s Memorial group, will be on hand to pass out information on the memorial, as well.

“Just have fun with it, that’s all we ask,” she said.

Registration for the fun run opens at 8 a.m. at the Nolan Center. There is a registration fee of $15. The run will begin at 9 a.m. The Facebook page for the fun run can be found under “Alaska Day Fun Run!” Southeast Beasts can be found on Facebook, as well.
