Juneau meet a "confidence booster" for volleyball team

Wrangell high school’s volleyball team played in Juneau against various 3A and 4A high schools last weekend. All the participating teams were divided into two brackets, gold and silver. Wrangell took second place in the silver bracket. Coach Jessica Whitaker called the tournament a confidence booster for her team, as they played against several schools that were larger and more experienced than them.

“It went fairly well for us,” she said. “We played against bigger schools than us, it was a very good learning experience.”

Whitaker pointed out that her team won a game against Craig, who took second place in the gold bracket. That win, she said, demonstrated her team’s skills. Whitaker also praised one of her players, Helen Decker. Decker is the “epitome of a student athlete,” she said, as she was recently named to the all-academic team. Being on the all-academic team requires a high skillset in volleyball, as well as maintaining a minimum 3.2 GPA in class. Whitaker also pointed out two of her freshman players, Emma Martinsen and Kendra Meissner, who stood out in the Juneau tournament.

The team will be playing in Craig this weekend. After that, Wrangell High School will host its first home game of the season on Oct. 26 and 27. The volleyball team will also be holding a fundraiser dinner the Sunday after the home games on Oct. 28.

“We don’t have a free weekend until Thanksgiving, I think,” Whitaker said.
