When one thinks of Valentine's Day, one might think of romantic candlelight dinners, chocolate, or cupid. Another common image of the holiday is flowers. Valentine's Day, as one might expect, is an important day for those in the flower business. It is the "Super Bowl of flowers," as florist Mya DeLong of Groundswell described it. This is true even in Wrangell. DeLong said that she has ordered 700 roses specially for the holiday. She is also receiving a helping hand from her mother, Barbara DeLong who is an experienced florist.
"This is probably my 10th year, or Valentine's Day, just being around shops and wholesalers," Mya said. "This will be my second year here at Groundswell."
Barbara has almost 35 years of experience in the flower business, Mya said. She has been featured in the Better Homes and Gardens magazine, and has had celebrities like Willie Nelson, Barbara Streisand, and Neil Diamond as clients. She and her daughter used to work together at a shop in Connecticut, but now she has come to Wrangell to give a helping hand.
"I'm proud of my daughter," Barbara said. "I'm very proud of her."
"Typically this is a really last-minute holiday," Mya said. "It's a little high stress, but you've got to manage it accordingly."
