The EATS Garden, outside of Evergreen Elementary School, has been a fun and educational project for students for several years. Evergreen students get to learn gardening techniques, how plants grow, and learn about having a healthy diet thanks to this community garden. The garden has seen some renovations recently, with a new greenhouse being constructed and having several donations and sponsorships from local businesses for garden beds. Community members now have another opportunity to support the EATS garden, as a "seed sale" has kicked off this month.
"We've been having this annual seed sale now for, gosh how long, four years now," said teacher Mikki Angerman. "There are organic seeds, so a lot of times the community likes to get its hands on organic seeds."
There is a wide variety of seeds for local gardeners to choose from, both organic and non-organic. Some of the seeds available for purchase include snap peas, green beans, cucumbers, kale, cherry tomatoes, basil, sunflowers, carrots, and much more. The seeds come from Fedco Seeds, a co-op seed packer out of Clinton, Maine. They have been in business since 1978, according to their website.
Angerman explained that people can purchase seeds from Fedco, and a percentage of the proceeds from the sale will come back to Wrangell to benefit the EATS Garden. The sale lasts until Feb. 26, according to teacher Jennifer Miller, and the seeds will be delivered sometime in early to mid-March. There are two order forms for people wishing to buy seeds, for organic and non-organic seeds. These can be found at the elementary school office. Online copies of these forms can be found on Facebook, as well, on the "E.A.T.S. Wrangell School Garden" page.
