Wolves go 2-0 against the Craig Panthers

The Wrangell Wolves got to add two more wins to their record this season after last weekend’s games against Craig High School. The Wolves, who have had an equal amount of wins and losses this season, were looking to turn one win against the Petersburg Vikings from two weeks ago into a winning streak. That streak is now three games long, and the Wolves are 6-4 in conference play.

On Friday, Feb. 8, the Wolves and Craig Panthers held their first game. The beginning of the game was exciting, but decidedly in Wrangell’s favor. By the end of the first half the score was 17 to 23, with the Wolves in the lead. During the second half, despite Craig’s best efforts, Wrangell was able to expand that lead from six points to nine.

The Panthers made many impressive shots, but it was not enough to catch up. The Wolves won with a final score of 36 to 45.

“It always feels good to win,” said Coach Cody Angerman.

Craig came back on Saturday, Feb. 9, with a much more spirited offense. Despite this, Wrangell held the lead at the end of each quarter. The closest the two teams came to each other, score-wise, was in the first quarter at 11 for Craig and 13 for Wrangell.

Wrangell pulled ahead after that, expanding their lead from two points to nine by the end of the second quarter. The Panthers had a small rally in the fourth quarter, making a total of 13 points. However, the Wolves met them point for point, also making 13 points that quarter. Wrangell kept their lead and won their second game of the weekend, with a final score of 52 to 59.

Angerman said that he was very proud of his team’s performance. He pointed out player Brett Abrahamson (No. 45), saying he probably played his best games of the

season that weekend. As a team, he continued, they have been improving throughout the whole season. The team comes onto the court with lots of energy. However, he said their area of focus is to find ways to keep that energy up through the whole game and not just the first half.

“The games were a little too close for comfort, at least for me,” Angerman said. “They’re getting better every week … As a team we’ve come a long ways.”

The Wolves will be on the hunt for more wins this weekend, as they go up against Metlakatla. The following weekend, on Feb. 22 and 23, they will hold their final home games of the season against Haines High School.
