The Wrangell Little League is getting ready for the upcoming season. It is looking to be a fairly exciting one, as well. Thanks to a large turnout in the 2018 season, League President Briana Schilling said that they are anticipating having teams travel and compete in tournaments in the 2019 season. This is something the little league teams have not done in several years, only playing against themselves in previous seasons. The projected large turnout of kids signing up to play, however, means that the league is in need of more volunteers.
“We are looking for as many volunteers as we can get to help with our upcoming 2019 season as coaches, umpires, board members, scorekeepers, field maintenance workers and concession stand workers,” Schilling said in an email. “We are in need of coaches for all leagues; T-ball, Minor League, Major League and Junior League.”
The little league season will kick off with tryouts in mid-March. Practices will officially begin on April 1. There are several age categories for teams, giving all kinds of Wrangell kids the opportunity to play. T-Ball is for children four-years-old to seven-years-old. The Minor League is for children between the ages of seven to nine-years-old. Major League is for children between the ages of nine-years-old and 12-years-old. Lastly, the Junior League is for kids ages 12 to 14-years-old. Schilling added that four-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult to all practices.
“We feel that the kids learn how to work as a team and also how to improve their own skills on the field,” Schilling said. “They learn how to win and how to lose. Sportsmanship is a big deal in baseball. They learn how to be dependable and how to support each other. They gain a great deal of self confidence throughout the season which is awesome to watch.”
Those wishing to volunteer are asked to do so as soon as possible. They can do so by contacting any current board member of the little league, or by visiting http://www.littleleague.org.
