Swim club goes to November Rain meet

The Wrangell Swim Club travelled to Petersburg this past weekend for the annual November Rain swim meet. Coach Jamie Roberts, also coach of the high school swim team, said she and junior coaches Wade Jack and Renee Roberts brought 22 swimmers to the meet this year. Of those, she said 12 had never attended a swim meet before. The swimmers' ages ranged from seven to fifteen-years-old.

"I was very impressed not only by their performance in the pool, but also by their ability to listen to instructions, be where they needed to be on time, wait for long periods of time between swims, keep track of their swim cap and goggles, and remember what event they were swimming when they stepped up to the starting block," Roberts wrote to the Wrangell Sentinel. "That's a lot to expect of a seven-year-old."

"I'm not sure what's up next for the club," Roberts wrote. "Because the ferry schedule doesn't line up with future meet opportunities, we will have to make decisions about when and where we are going next."

The following is a list of the team's results and age categories. Roberts wrote in a summary of the meet that "*" indicates that the swimmer was competing in their event for the first time.

Eight-years-old and under

In the girls 25-yard freestyle, Lily Stearns took 3rd place (20.30*); Stella Buness took 5th place (21.23); Delilah Clark took 7th place (22.45*); Clara Carney took 13th place (26.82*); and Brooke Ostrander took 17th place (28.35*).

In the boys 25-yard freestyle, Tommy Rohr-Wickman took 1st place (19.86*).

In the girls 50-yard freestyle, Delilah Clark took 6th place (47.98*); Stella Buness took 7th place (49.60); Clara Carney took 11th place (1:00.37); Brooke Ostrander took 15th place (1:09.89*).
