There are many different ways to celebrate the coming new year. People go to parties, make toasts, agree to new resolutions. In Wrangell, a new tradition that will be kicking off this New Year's Eve will be a murder most foul. Not an actual murder, of course, but a murder mystery masquerade ball at the Nolan Center.
For those who are unfamiliar with how a murder mystery works, Nolan Center Director Cyni Crary described it like a live version of the board game "Clue." It is similar to a play, but the entire audience is involved, as well. The public is encouraged to come to the party dressed in 1920s-themed clothing and a mask. They will be assigned characters to play, and through the evening there will be a "murder." The mystery will be played out through scenes across the evening, and the public will try to solve who the "killer" is.
"It's part of dinner," Crary said. "So you come in and there's going to be a cocktail hour where we kind of go over all of the different roles, and then we'll move into dinner. It's a prime rib dinner, it's going to be really nice. So the whole evening is ... we want it to be a really classy event."
Besides a fun mystery and a good dinner, Crary said that there will be photo opportunities and prizes at the dinner. She also said that this is planned to be the first of a new yearly tradition for the Nolan Center. As this new year will be the start of a new decade, the theme
of the dinner will be the "Roaring Twenties." Tickets are available online, and will also be available for purchase at the door. To learn more about the masquerade ball, visit the event's Facebook page under "Murder Mystery Masquerade Ball." The ball will begin at 7 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
