Three new cases of COVID-19 were announced in Wrangell over a period of four days this past week. This has brought the total number of cases of the virus in town up to 12.
The first case in this string, case no. 10, was announced Friday, July 24. During the initial announcement, it was not known if this case was from a local or a nonresident. This information was updated the next day, July 25, with the announcement of case no. 11. Both cases 10 and 11 were confirmed to be Wrangell residents, as well as to be symptomatic cases. Health officials found evidence of community spread, according to press releases from the borough. This means that in some confirmed cases of COVID-19, there is no identified source of infection nor can the infection be traced back to known exposure to the virus.
The most recent case was announced Monday, July 27. This person was reported to be a close contact of the July 24 case, and once again was a local resident.
The most recent update from the city, dated July 28, shared the "at a glance" COVID-19 information for Wrangell. There are 12 total cases identified in town, six in locals and six in non-residents. Of these, only three cases are considered to be active. The other nine are considered recovered.
