Items approved in Planning and Zoning meeting

The Wrangell Planning and Zoning Commission met last Thursday evening, Aug. 13, to cover several items on their agenda.

The first item they covered was a preliminary plat review of the D&P Ellis Subdivision. Nobody was present to speak during the public hearing portion of this item. The commission approved the plat review under two conditions: The covered walkway between proposed lots 16A and 17A must be removed, and the applicant should work with the harbor department to resolve the issue of dock structures encroaching on the property.

Second on the agenda was a request by John and Brenda Yeager for a short term rental unit. According to the conditional use application, in the agenda packet, the Yeager family is seeking to use a bedroom apartment on the first floor of their home as a rental unit. The clients they rent to would primarily be associated with their sightseeing tours and fishing charters, the application reads. This application was approved on the conditions that guests receive guidance on being respectful of neighbors and keeping noise or negative behaviors to a minimum, and that the Yeagers provide two off-street parking areas.

The third item on their agenda was a request from Brett Woodbury to purchase city-owned land. The property in question is Lot 6A, Block 61, Industrial Park Subdivision III. This was approved by the assembly.

The meeting's agenda was amended during the meeting, to include an update on the city's old Institute Property. Economic Development Director Carol Rushmore explained to the commission that the assembly held a workshop on the property last week. They did not want to see commercial development in the first or second phase of renovation, she said, due to the need for residential housing in Wrangell. They recommended moving commercial development to the south side of the property, and to increase future lot sizes to 20,000 square feet and more. A future work session regarding the Institute Property is going to be scheduled for Sept. 8, she also said.
