Wrangell's annual coho and halibut derbies are just around the corner. The coho salmon derby begins tomorrow, Aug. 28, and will run until Sept. 7. The halibut derby, meanwhile, will take place from Sept. 4 to Sept. 7. Last year, in the 2019 fishing derbies, over 220 tickets were sold to participants.
For those participating in the derbies, weigh-in stations will be located at the Chamber of Commerce office from Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., or the harbor master's office at Reliance Harbor from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. Halibut will only be weighed at Reliance Harbor, according to the chamber's fishing derby website, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 4 to Sept. 7.
This year, first place in the coho derby will receive 30 percent of all ticket sales. First place in the halibut derby will win a prize of $700. On top of that, whoever catches the biggest coho salmon over Labor Day weekend will win $250. Everyone who purchases a derby ticket will be entered into a drawing for two Alaska Airlines tickets. According to the derby website, participants are also encouraged to tag their fishing photos online, with #FishingIsGreatAtWrangellAlaska to enter another drawing for a $250 prize.
Tickets to participate in the derby are available at a number of local shops. Visit http://www.wrangellfishderby.com for more details, rules, and derby ladders.
