Primary election results released, 15 percent turnout in Wrangell

The official results for the Aug. 18 primary election have been released on the Alaska Division of Elections website. The primary election gives voters the opportunity to narrow down which candidates they would like to consider in the upcoming general election, later this year.

Out of Wrangell’s 1,973 registered voters, 299 votes were cast in the primary. This is a turnout of 15.15 percent, according to the state website. Statewide, turnout for the primary election was 22.7 percent.

Across the state, Dan Sullivan and Al Gross received the majority of votes to campaign for U.S. Senate in the general election. Don Young won the primary election to run once again for his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well. His opponent will be Alyse Galvin.

Wrangell gave 197 votes to Dan Sullivan, and 67 votes to Al Gross. Don Young also received 170 votes from Wrangell, while Alyse Galvin received 61.

In state politics, Bert Stedman received almost 64 percent of the vote, 1,931 total, beating his opponent Michael Sheldon who received 1,096 votes. For House District 36, Leslie Becker received 100 percent of the vote, 1,442 in total.

Wrangell provided 144 votes for Bert Stedman, and 66 votes for Michael Sheldon. The community also provided 188 votes for Becker.

The general election will take place on Nov. 3.
