"Pups In Parks" contest open until Oct. 15

Wrangell Parks and Rec announced a new photo contest for the public to participate in last Tuesday, Sept. 22. The "Pups In Parks" contest will give Wrangell dog owners a chance to go enjoy the great outdoors with their canines, and take a few pictures while they're out there. There will even be a chance for their dogs to be featured in a new parks and recreation calendar.

Wrangell is a rather dog-friendly town, Parks and Rec Director Kate Thomas said. There are somewhere around 550 dogs on the island, she said, according to numbers she researched a few years ago. The idea for a dog calendar was the brainchild of Lucy Moline-Robinson, she added. Excess funds from calendar sales will go towards the annual Helping Our Parks project. The plan is to have the calendars ready for purchase in time for Christmas, she said.

"We did a little snippet of a dog contest, during the quarantine or lockdown period, and that was really popular," Thomas said. "Once we got a bunch of those notifications from the public to our Facebook page, and we started re-sharing them, they were super popular. From that, Lucy generated an idea to do an annual dog calendar."

Photos must be submitted by email to recreation@wrangell.com. Parks and Rec will then share these photos to Facebook. Whichever pictures get the most likes, according to a Parks and Rec Facebook post, will be considered for inclusion in the calendar. Parks and Rec will be accepting photos through Oct. 15.
