Midnight Madness this Friday

Midnight Madness, Wrangell’s annual welcoming of the Christmas season, is scheduled to take place this Friday, Dec. 4. Stephanie Cook, with the chamber of commerce, said that people can expect many of the usual traditions of Midnight Madness, but with some changes in response to COVID-19.

“We are going to be doing the tree lighting at 6 p.m., and we’ll do the count-off from 10 to 0, and the tree will light up,” She said. “We are asking people to mask up and social distance if they’re going to be coming downtown to watch the tree lighting, just for everybody’s safety.”

For those not wishing to attend the Christmas Tree lighting in person, Cook said they will be livestreaming the event on the chamber’s Facebook page. She also said, like previous years, most businesses will remain open late and have some sales for people wanting to do some Christmas shopping.

One change to Midnight Madness this year, Cook said, is there will be no Christmas bazaar at the Nolan Center, nor a chance for kids to take photos with Santa Claus. However, she did say they will have an inflatable Santa prop and candy canes at the downtown pavilion for the kids.

“Get out there, get shopping, and support our local businesses,” Cook said. “Mask up and stay safe.”
