Lady Wolves claim two wins in season openers

The Wrangell Lady Wolves scored two victories in their season openers last Friday and Saturday. The girls basketball team hosted the Craig Lady Panthers for the first conference games of the season.

While the Lady Wolves are facing a unique year, Coach Christy Good said playing basketball games, especially winning them, is a good way to provide a sense of normalcy for players and the public during these trying times.

"Our chemistry really came together this weekend," Good said. "These two wins have been very good not only for us, but for our community as well."

The game Friday opened with the Lady Wolves taking the first points and pulling ahead 8-2. In the second quarter, despite Craig's efforts, Wrangell maintained a lead at 16-10. In the third quarter, the game briefly tied at 16-16 but the Lady Wolves surged ahead in the latter part of the quarter and retook the lead at 32-20.

The fourth quarter saw the Lady Wolves hold their lead with free throws and more baskets, winning 42-35.

Saturday's game saw Wrangell and Craig much closer, with the Lady Wolves maintaining a narrow lead of 13-10 in the first quarter. Though the second quarter was close for several minutes, Wrangell pulled ahead 21-16. The lead extended to 36-26 in the third quarter, before Wrangell won 53-37.

"The first night was a little nervy, but our girls settled in and played well," Good said. "I'm proud of them, especially the eighth graders." The Lady Wolves are playing this year with two eighth graders after the state school sports association and Wrangell School District approved the accommodation due to a shortage of high schoolers turning out for the team.

Good said she was impressed by how well the team came together. Moving forward, she said they will be focusing on improving their rebounding, as well as continuing to strengthen team relationships.

"Every day we're improving all our skillsets," she said.

The team will travel to Metlakatla this weekend for their first away games of the season. The high school reports that the Lady Wolves will play at 5:35 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. The games will be streamed on YouTube on the Annette Island School District's channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkVBsfQQlXfiEhAGAJCJsLA.
