The Wrangell Wolves claimed two victories against the Craig Panthers in their first regular conference games of the season this year. The high school boys basketball team hosted Craig for a set of home games Feb. 5 and 6.
During the first game, the Wolves pulled ahead and established a commanding lead of 24-9. They extended the lead to 24 points in the second quarter, 41-17, then maintained their wide lead to win 61-34.
Saturday's game saw Wrangell take the lead again, 12-7. The second-quarter lead grew to 35-16, with Wrangell leading 52-25 at the end of the third quarter before taking the win at 68-46.
"Getting two wins is good," Coach Cody Angerman said. "Hopefully, we can carry it on the rest of the season."
Angerman said moving forward, he is going to focus his team on bettering their defense. There were some mistakes in the games he hopes to correct, and he wants to keep up their momentum from these two wins. He wants to see improved rebounding and more communication between players. All in all, he said, he wants to make sure all his players are being leaders on the court.
"There's always a lot of things to work on," Angerman said. "We're just going to keep on keeping on."
The team will travel to Metlakatla this weekend for their first away games of the season. The junior varsity game is set for 4:35 p.m. Friday, according to Wrangell schools. The varsity game is set for 7:20 p.m. Friday. The Wolves will play another varsity game at 10:40 a.m. Saturday.
