Shamrock Shufflers pick up their feet Sunday

The Shamrock Shuffle, a St. Patrick's Day tradition in Wrangell, is set for Sunday afternoon at the covered basketball court. This will the eighth-annual fun run, said organizer Lucy Moline-Robinson. Not only will it be a good opportunity to get some exercise, she said, but also to help raise money for the high school shop class.

Robinson, with running group Southeast Beasts, said they are anticipating a good turnout for the run. As such, she wanted the public to remember several safety practices for the event: Wear masks when not running and socially distance.

Although St. Patrick's Day is not until Wednesday, Robinson said people are strongly encouraged to wear green.

The Shamrock Shuffle will begin at the covered basketball court, by Evergreen Elementary School, at 1 p.m. Sunday. There will be a 5k route, a 10k route, and a half marathon. The routes were being planned by Dale McMurren, Robinson said, and details will be shared on the event's Facebook page once they are finalized.

There is a $10 entry fee per person. Proceeds will go to help purchase a computer numerical control (CNC) router for the Wrangell High School shop class. Robinson said she doubts they will raise the full amount from a single run, but every little bit helps.

"The CNC router, I think the cost is around three grand," she said. "I want to put a dent in that."

As added incentive to participate, Robinson added there will be several prizes. Angerman's donated a pair of XTRATUF boots for a door prize, according to the Shamrock Shuffle event page. First-place finishers will receive a homemade pie, second-place finishers will win a pound of bacon, and third-place finishers will get coffee or hot chocolate.
