Visitor bureau holds Wrangell photo contest

The Wrangell Convention and Visitor Bureau launched the first of a series of photo and video contests earlier this month to help replenish its stock of images for marketing efforts.

"The Best of Wrangell" is scheduled to run to the end of May.

The contest is also an opportunity for community members and past visitors to show off their photography or videography skills.

Ceona Koch, with the bureau, said that while they will accept any photos or videos, except those showing inappropriate content, they are particularly interested in photos featuring wildlife and people. They want the contest to showcase what there is to do and see in Wrangell beyond just pretty landscapes.

"Our main goal is to get photos of people doing things," she said.

There are some rules for participants to keep in mind before submitting photos. Images must be at least 300 dpi and videos can only be eight seconds long, at most. Entrants also should include a note about the location and subject of their photos or videos, as well as their preferred photo credit. The limit is 10 entries per person.

"We are looking for photos and videos that showcase all of the activities and adventure to be found on and around Wrangell Island," the bureau wrote on its website. "By participating in the Wrangell Photo Contest, you agree to allow the Wrangell Convention & Visitor Bureau to use the content generated and publicly posted by you for marketing and publicity purposes, both print and online media."

Entries may be submitted by posting to the contest's Facebook group, "The Best of Wrangell | March-May Photo Contest," or contestants can send their entries to adventure@wrangellalaska.com and the visitor bureau will post them on Facebook.

Koch said the top three winners in both the photography and video categories will receive gift baskets from several downtown shops.

The contest is the first in a series of contests the bureau plans to organize through the year, she said. Another contest can be expected this summer, starting in June.
