Continuing a decade-plus of tradition, the U.S. Forest Service and other volunteers will sponsor Family Fishing Day at Pats Lake from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 26.
The fishing day is an opportunity for families to come out and enjoy the outdoors, said Corree Delabrue with the Forest Service. It’s also a chance for kids to develop an interest in fishing and become “anglers for life.”
“Family Fishing Day, it started probably over 10 years ago, I think,” she said. “It was originally put on and organized by the local Boy Scout troop. When all those scouts kind of aged out … in order to keep the fishing day going the Forest Service kind of stepped in.”
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has special rules for Pats Lake to help with the fishing day, Delabrue said. Anglers under the age of 16 can use bait while fishing, and while there is a catch limit of two trout there is no size limit, but only during the third and fourth weekend of June.
Those coming out to the Family Fishing Day can expect games, fish-print T-shirt painting, and lessons on lure making, and of course fishing. Door prizes and lunch will be provided by the Stikine Sportsmen Association, Delabrue said.
Kim Wickman, with the Wrangell Cooperative Association, said they will be volunteering to help with the event, too.
“We try to offer a little bit for everybody,” Delabrue said. “We encourage families to come out and enjoy our nice resources in Wrangell.”
