Hot dog! 4th of July a week away

Actually, the hot dogs will be cold dogs.

A new event at this year’s Wrangell Fourth of July celebration will be a wiener toss, planned for 8:30 p.m. July 3 on Front Street.

Sponsored by radio station KSTK, the toss will offer prizes for unusual tosses, not necessarily the longest toss or last to drop the dog, said Brittani Robbins, executive director of the chamber of commerce. “It’s throwing raw hot dogs at each other,”she said.

While the long holiday weekend is just a week away and plans are set for most events, the chamber, which organizes the Fourth of July celebration, still needs chairpersons for the log rolling and greased pole competitions on July 3, Robbins said Monday.

Additional volunteer help also is needed for the toddler games on July 4, she said.

The Fourth festivities will start on July 2 with 3-on-3 basketball at the covered play area behind Evergreen Elementary School and the annual Art Clark Scrap Fish Derby, ending the evening of July 4 with a welcome-home picnic (location still to be determined).

The fireworks will go off about 11 p.m. July 3.

There is one change this year due to COVID-19: The Beta Sigma Phi pie sale. Instead of selling individual slices, only whole pies will be sold, and they will need to be picked up at the time of sale.
