Registration for the new school year will open online Wednesday.
In-person registration will be offered 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 17 at the high school gym.
Classes start Aug. 30. Teachers start back at work Aug. 25.
Families registering their kids for school should not expect any big changes from last year, said Megan Powell, high school secretary.
“It’s the same as last year, other than last year we didn’t do an in-person (registration) due to COVID,” she said. “It should be really easy for parents. I did it last year for my daughter and it was real easy.”
Bill Burr, Wrangell’s new schools superintendent, said families are welcome to register for classes either in-person or online, depending on their comfort level.
There should not be any special information they need to gather beforehand, he said. The district may consider some changes next year to simplify the process further, he said.
“A lot of the districts have online packets that people are filling out every year,” Burr said. “Wrangell’s amount of paperwork that is done every year might be a little high, that would be something we look at for next year.”
Wrangell’s registration is run through PowerSchool, a student information system that holds the district’s records, the superintendent explained.
“Classes, grades, report cards, all of the information that is considered student information,” he said. “Demographics, contacts, all of that.” Every school district has a digital system of some sort, Burr added. “PowerSchool is the big one for this state.”
For questions or registration assistance, Powell said school offices will reopen next Wednesday, and secretaries will be available to help. Any students new to the district should contact the secretaries, she said.
Wrangell is looking to see an increase in enrollment numbers this year, after the COVID-19 pandemic caused student count to drop from around 300 down to 200. The district has budgeted for about 225 students, but Burr has said the schools hope to surpass that number.
