Community garden begins building committee

Five people attended a meeting for the Wrangell community garden last Wednesday, three in person and two via phone, along with project leaders Valerie Massie and Kim Wickman. The meeting was held to begin selecting committee members and discuss an action plan.

According to Massie, the Wrangell Cooperative Association IGAP coordinator, Grace Wintermyer volunteered to be the primary treasurer and Sage Smiley volunteered for the secretary position.

“We also reviewed a draft garden bed subscription template,” Massie said. Changes to the subscription form discussed by the group will be prepared and sent out via email this week to interested committee members.

Massie said that four volunteer tasks were also identified: Event setup, general area weeding outside of personal garden beds, end-of-season cleanup and winterization outside of personal garden beds, and compostable material preparation work for the commercial-scale composter that will be installed. “We will also discuss fencing and rock work options at the next meeting.”

The community garden will be located at Lions Ball Field just to the north of City Park at 1.5 Mile.

Those interested in joining the community garden committee or volunteering their time can email Wickman at kwickman1229@gmail.com.
