The Wrangell Cooperative Association announced the four winning candidates from its March 8 tribal council election.
Results posted March 9 show Frank Churchill Jr., Heidi Armstrong, Edward Rilatos and Lavina “Lovey” Brock were elected to the eight-member council, which also consists of Xúns', Richard Oliver; Michelle Clark; Jason Clark; and AAnshaawasnook, Lue Knapp, speaker of the Naanyaa.aayí clan house.
Elections are held every year, and each councilmember serves a two-year term, Councilmember Knapp said Monday.
Brock, Churchill Jr. and Rilatos were incumbents up for reelection, and Donald “DJ” McConachie had resigned, Knapp said, so there were four seats on the ballot.
Armstrong was the only non-incumbent elected, taking McConachie’s vacant seat.
There were 11 candidates this year: Robyn Byrd; Samuel Campus; TooWuHouck’w, Caroline Demmert; Timothy Gillen Sr .; Olivia Main; Amber Lynn Wade and Asia White also ran, according to a list provided by tribal administrator Esther Reese on Feb. 25.
A total of 111 people voted, Knapp said. The tribe consists of roughly 600 members, according to its Facebook page.
