Community auditions next week for 'Sound of Music'

It’s been more than 60 years since “The Sound of Music” debuted on Broadway and more than 20 years since Wrangell staged a community play, and organizers hope that the years have not diminished the appeal of either.

Auditions for a community production of the famous musical will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 20 and 21 at the Nolan Center.

The performance is planned for the first weekend of December, said Cyni Crary, Nolan Center director. She and Tom Jenkins are the organizers of the theatrical production.

“We’ve had a huge interest,” Crary said last week. Anyone interested in auditioning but who will not be in town Sept. 20-21 can stop by the Nolan Center, pick up a script (which are available now), and contact Crary to set up an individual audition.

“Performers will be given lines/scripts to read in the auditions and songs to sing,” the casting call-out on Facebook said. “There are some non-singing parts, as well.”

It’s been at least 20 years since the community staged a full production of live theater. Some remember “The Music Man” as the last production in town.

While the organizers are flexible on the number of cast members — “If we have four nuns or 14 nuns, we’ll make it work, Crary said — they need enough children to play the parts of the entire von Trapp family.

Organizers selected “The Sound of Music” because its characters span all ages, providing opportunities for a wide range of residents to participate, Crary said. “I believe there are adults of all ages who are into theater.”

It’s also a well-known story, with a dose of nostalgia for people who have seen the play or the award-winning movie, she said. “We’re definitely trying to get things rolling again after COVID.”
