Chamber of commerce should recognize businesses that close

As some of you may have already heard, Wrangell is losing yet another downtown storefront business. Twisted Root Market has announced its closure. Twisted Root was dedicated to providing Wrangell with fresh, organic produce. Its mission was to keep us healthy with a variety of nutritious food options, while also partnering with local farms, bakers — and they sold local eggs. It is truly a devastating loss for our community.

Closing a business is an incredibly difficult process. I ask that the Wrangell Chamber of Commerce rally around Twisted Root with enthusiasm and support; make sure this business knows it was important, highlight its accomplishments, and be its biggest cheerleader after making the difficult decision to shut its doors.

This courtesy was not extended to Groundswell, a long-standing chamber member which closed last month, but hopefully this will be a new adopted practice by the chamber board to make sure businesses get proper recognition during their closure.

I believe most downtown businesses are suffering and it’s absolutely crucial that the chamber keeps a pulse on the needs of business owners. A simple walk-in or an email would suffice. Just to ask them how they’re doing and what they may need to excel and succeed would be a great start.

Thank you so much to the current chamber board members for your commitment to providing community enrichment. I’ve served alongside most of you on this board.

With five open chamber seats on the board of directors, it’s up to the chamber leadership to effectively establish a synergy with our most precious commodity: small businesses.
