The Wrangell High School swim team traveled to Sitka last Friday and Saturday to compete in the town’s invitational swim meet, turning in three personal bests, four season bests and eight top 10 finishes.
Head coach Jamie Roberts said the team has been working on breathing patterns and other techniques, and “sometimes, it takes a while for their practice patterns to translate into race patterns, as muscle memory can be challenging to overcome.”
Despite that, the individual swimmers did well in their categories. Wrangell didn’t have a men’s relay team, as they were short one swimmer this trip.
“This weekend, they all showcased race techniques they have been working on over the past several weeks,” Roberts said. “That’s what I asked of them and that’s what they delivered. I was more interested in the technique than the time on the scoreboard.”
Alisha Armstrong finished 10th in the 100-yard backstroke, while Jack Roberts finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 200-yard individual medley. Nate Rooney finished 10th in the 50-yard freestyle on both days of competition and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle.
