Wrangell volleyballers win every match at local tournament to take first

The Lady Wolves are howling with excitement over their multiple victories last week.

Over the course of three days last week, the Wrangell High School girls volleyball team beat five teams in five matches to rank first in south seeding for regionals in mid-November.

Craig, Klawock, Haines, Skagway and Petersburg teams came to Wrangell to battle it out in the high school gym. The competitions were delayed somewhat because poor weather conditions led to travel delays by some of the teams.

Wrangell's first matchup was against the neighboring Petersburg Lady Vikings, with the Wolves tearing up the competition and sending them off to Valhalla.

In the first set, Wrangell won 25-13. The second set's score was exactly the same, and the third set was 25-11. Teams played the best three out of five.

Wrangell head coach Alyssa Allen said the team to beat during the three-day tourney was Craig, which took on Klawock in the first matchup last Wednesday. Klawock won the first set, but Craig came back to win three sets in a row.

Meanwhile, the Lady Wolves beat Klawock on Wednesday night in four sets, winning 25-11 in the first set; losing the second set 20-25; winning the third set 25-19; and winning the fourth set 25-14.

On Thursday, Wrangell played Haines in the morning, beating them in three sets, 25-9, 25-22 and 25-11.

The team then played Craig on Thursday evening. The two teams brought their A games, but it was Wrangell that was left standing victorious on the hardwood when the dust settled after five sets. The Wolves came out ahead 25-22; 16-25; 21-25; 25-20, and 16-14.

On Friday morning, Wrangell played one game against Skagway, beating the visiting team in three sets, 25-3, 25-8 and 25-11.

"I feel really good. I think we played really well as a team this tournament," said senior Kiara Harrison after the final match on Friday against Skagway. "We had some definitely mental games and we pulled through. I'm proud of all the girls."

Harrison said communication was the key component to helping win the matches, and she believes the team is getting better at it. "We can always improve our communication, for sure," she said. "We had some hitting errors. Those were the main things we work on."

Allen noted communication and other items as areas for improvement.

"Our passing on serves received needs some improvement, and they can always communicate better with each other," she said. "We're definitely improving in all aspects of the game."

Allen said last week's wins show the team is on the right track.

"I believe we have all the pieces to get to state," she said. "As long as we stay healthy and keep working hard, I believe we are going to be where we need to be at the end of the season."

The team has a bye week this weekend, then travel to Skagway for the north seeding tournament.

"I'm excited. Super excited," Harrison said. "It's going to be fun."
